****2nd CALL FOR PAPERS****

2nd Workshop on Information Credibility on the Web (WICOW 2008)

          in conjunction with 17th ACM CIKM
2008

   October 30, 2008, Napa Valley, California
http://www.dl.kuis.kyoto-u.ac.jp/wicow2

* AIM OF THE WORKSHOP *

The aim of this workshop is to provide a forum for discussion about issues
related to information credibility and its evaluation.

As computers and computer networks become more sophisticated, a huge
amount of information, such as that found in Web documents, has been
accumulated and circulated. Such information gives people a framework
for organizing their daily lives. A well-functioning society needs technology
that can be used to manage this wealth of information and, in
particular,
investigate its credibility. This technology would be able to handle a
wide
range of tasks: extracting credible information related to a given topic,
organizing this information, detecting its provenance, clarifying
background, facts, and various related opinions and the distribution of
them, and so on. Especially, as the Web is becoming a major source of
information nowadays, it is necessary to provide efficient and reliable
methods for evaluation of Web content's trustworthiness.

* TOPICS *

We invite submissions on any aspects of information credibility on the
Web. Topics include, but are not limited to:

- Information credibility evaluation and its applications
- Content analysis for credibility evaluation
- Sentiment analysis of content
- Credibility of Web search results
- Search models and applications for trustworthy content
- Conflicting opinion detection and analysis
- Credibility evaluation of user-generated content (e.g., Wikipedia)
- Information credibility evaluation in social networks
- Analysis of information dissemination
- Estimation of author and publishing venue reputation
- Spatial and temporal aspects in information credibility
- Estimation of information age, provenance and validity
- Sociological and psychological aspects of information credibility
- Users study for information credibility
- Risk assessment of information credibility
- Multimedia content credibility
- Persuasive technologies
- Information credibility in online advertising and Internet monetization
- Object identification on the Web

With the computational power of thousands or
millions of computers in clusters or P2P systems, the challenges that arise
are manifold, ranging from efficient resource discovery to load balancing
issues and distributed ranking problems. This workshop will provide space
for researchers to discuss these problems and to define new directions for
the work on distributed information retrieval. We will also encourage
submissions of position papers, experiences, software demonstrations and
posters in the area of distributed information retrieval.

Topics of interest will include, but will not be limited to:

* Novel P2P IR applications/architectures
* Retrieval models for distributed and P2P IR
* Heterogeneous distributed data integration and organization
* Query routing in distributed environments
* Distributed ranking
* Distributed index structures
* Efficiency in distributed and P2P IR
* Scalability of distributed indexing and retrieval
* Multimedia retrieval for distributed and P2P IR
* Distributed indexing and retrieval of dynamic information sources
* Standards / benchmarks for P2P IR
* Grid IR
* Decentralized reputation management
* Distributed data provenance
* Tools for distributed IR

IMPORTANT DATES

Abstract and paper submission deadline: July 15, 2008
Notification of Acceptance: August 10, 2008
Camera ready deadline: August 15, 2008 (hard deadline for publication)

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

Papers should not exceed 8 pages, double column, including figures, tables
and references in the standard ACM conference format. Papers have to present
original research contributions not concurrently submitted elsewhere, and
must be submitted electronically in printable PDF format (other formats will
be rejected).

Submitted papers will undergo a peer review process by at least three
members of the program committee. Notification and reviews will be
communicated via email.

All workshop proceedings will be printed along with the CIKM proceedings by
ACM. Best papers will be considered for publication on a special issue of an
international journal.

Submission Web site:  https://cmt.research.microsoft.com/LSDSIR2008/

WORKSHOP CHAIRS

Sebastian Michel, EPFL, Switzerland
Gleb Skobeltsyn, EPFL, Switzerland
Wai Gen Yee, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, USA

STEERING COMMITTEE

Flavio Junqueira, Yahoo! Workshop NEFORS 2008

========================= CALL FOR PAPERS =========================

Second International Workshop on New forms of reasoning for the
Semantic Web: scaleable, tolerant and dynamic

http://nefors08.larkc.eu

Co-located with the 3rd Asian Semantic Web Conference (ASWC 2008)
http://www.aswc2008.org/

Pathumthani, Thailand, 8th-11th December 2008

===================================================================

Workshop Objectives
===================

The Semantic Web is the vision of a Web of data usable for both humans
but also machines. This web, consists of inter-connected instance data
annotated with possibly expressive ontologies. Therefore a tremendous
amount of information becomes available that should be processed based
on formal semantics attached to it. The Semantic Web community has
developed a number of languages (such as RDF, RDF Schema, OWL) that
deploy logic for this purpose. Impressive progress has been made on
scalable storage, querying and inference for these languages, and they
are successfully being deployed on large intranets and medium-scale
web-applications.

However existing reasoning techniques often fail to live up to the
expectations put into them in this context. They can often neither
deal with high number of instances, the expressiveness of the
ontologies describing them or the inherent inconsistency and
incompleteness of data on the Web.

This workshop is intended to focus on these problems of scalability
and robustness of reasoning on the Web, and furthermore to investigate
alternative reasoning methods, which take incompleteness and
distribution of data and knowledge as inherent properties into
account.

NeForS08 is the follow-up of the first international workshop on
"New forms of reasoning for the Semantic Web: scalable, tolerant and
dynamic", which took place in Busan, Korea in November 2007 and was
co-located with the 6th International Semantic Web Conference
(ISWC 2007) and 2nd Asian Semantic Web Conference (ASWC 2007).

Topics of Interest
==================

We welcome all research contributions that address one or more of the
following topics:

* Reasoning for the Web
* Querying and searching
* Scalability to the Web level
* Efficient storage of structured data that scale to a very large size

We also aim to attract participants from scientific fields not
typically seen at Semantic Web events:

* Economics can tell us about cost-benefit trade-off models, sunk-cost
theory and the role of negotiation in obtaining near-optimal results
under bounded resources

* Cognitive Science can tell us about strategies of human memory and
human reasoning which is so succesful in reaching good enough
conclusion in limited time-spans, using methods such as priming,
attention scoping, recency-based self-optimising memory, etc.

* Computational Learning Theory has contributions to make with their
notions of Probably Approximately Correct (PAC) computing, and
strategies for abstraction and compression of information.

* Combinatorial Search has made recent breakthroughs in handling
massive search-spaces with heuristics based on Monte Carlo
simulations.

Event Information
=================

The workshop will take place during the 3rd Asian Semantic Web
Conference (ASWC2008) as a full-day event. It will be organized as a
full day event and include an invited talk by Kyung-il Tony Lee,
president and CEO of Saltlux Inc. on the industrial view on semantic
technologies and the need for large-scale reasoning.

Please note that for every accepted paper at least one of the authors
must attend the workshop and must register for the workshop and the
main conference. Submission of a paper is not required for attendance
at the workshop. However, in the event that the workshop cannot
accommodate all who would like to participate, those who have
submitted a paper will be given priority.

Submissions
===========

The workshop invites full papers (up to 15 pages) as well as short
papers (up to 5 pages). All contributions will be peer reviewed by the
program commitee (see http://nefors08.larkc.eu) and accepted
submissions will be published in a dedicated book. The number of
accepted papers will be kept deliberately low in order to leave
sufficient time for discussion after presentations. Additionally we
are considering a special issue in a journal on semantic computing for
extended versions of selected, high quality submissions.

Submitted papers must be written in English and one of the following
format must be used for the first submission: PDF, PS, DOC. For
submissions please follow LNCS formatting instructions (see
http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-2-72376-0 for
details) to prepare your paper and consider using the camera ready
format even for the first submission.

Furthermore papers need to be submitted electronically through the
EasyChair using the following link:
http://www.easychair.org/conferences?conf=nefors08

Important Dates
===============

* September 15, 2008: Submission of papers
* September 30, 2008: Notification of acceptance
* October 15, 2008: Camera-ready version due
* December 8, 2008: Workshop

Organizers
==========

Zhisheng Huang, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Uwe Keller, Semantic Technology Institute, University of Innsbruck, Austria
Ning Zhong, Maebashi Institute of Technology, Japan and
The International WIC Institute/BJUT, China

Program Committee
=================

Ruzica Piskac, EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland
Stefan Schlobach, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Lael Schooler, MPI for Human Development, Berlin, Germany
Pascal Hitzler, Institut for Angewandte Informatik und Formale
Beschreibungsverfahren (AIFB), Karlsruhe, Germany
Jia Hu, The International WIC Institute/BJUT, Beijing, China
Yue Pan, IBM Research Laboratory, Beijing, China
Xiaoping Chen, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, China
Emanuele Della Valle, CEFRIEL, Milano, Italy
Stefania Galizia, Knowledge Media Institute, The Open University,
Milton Keynes, United Kingdom
Guilin Qi, Institut for Angewandte Informatik und Formale
Beschreibungsverfahren (AIFB), Karlsruhe, Germany
Michael Witbrock, Cycorp, Austin, Texas, USA
Juanzi Li, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China
Ilya Zaihrayeu, University of Trento, Trento, Italy

Steering Committee
===================
Dieter Fensel, Semantic Technology Institute, University of Innsbruck, Austria
Frank van Harmelen, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Contact
=======
Florian Fischer
Semantic Technology Institute, University of Innsbruck, Austria
Technikerstr. 21a, 6020 Innsbruck, Austria
Email: florian.fischer@sti2.at

************************************************
This SIGIR-IRList message and the SIG-IRList Digest (a moderated IR newsletter), are brought to you by SIGIR, distributed from the University of Sheffield and edited by Raman Chandrasekar (irlist-editor@acm.org).
o To submit an article, e-mail irlist-editor@acm.org with the subject heading SUBMIT
o To unsubscribe, e-mail listproc@sheffield.ac.uk with no subject and the following body text: unsubscribe irlist
o To subscribe, e-mail listproc@sheffield.ac.uk with no subject and the following body text: subscribe irlist <your name>
o For more info, visit: http://www.sigir.org/sigirlist/
o IRList postings can be seen at http://searchtextminingspaces.live.com/
o Subscribe to a feed of these messages at http://searchtextmining.spaces.live.com/feed.rss
These files are not to be sold or used for commercial purposes.
THE OPINIONS EXPRESSED WITHIN THIS DOCUMENT DO NOT REPRESENT THOSE OF THE EDITOR, MICROSOFT CORPORATION OR THE UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD. Antoniadis, M. Burlet, Y. Denneulin, E. Gaussier, S. Aseervatham
Website: http://www-id.imag.fr/~denneuli/LASCAR/page7/page7.html

Description

Several categorization problems involve category systems comprising a
very large number of categories. Patent offices, for example, are in
charge of assigning, to every patent request, a code from the IPC
(International Patent Classification), which contains roughly 70,000
sub-divisions. DMOZ, which is often deemed as the largest Web directory,
contains in the range of 600,000 categories, into which new pages are
categorized. A similar situation is encountered with the semantic
annotation of documents (e.g. journal abstracts) in the medical domain,
where concepts of MeSH (which contains more than 150,000 concepts) are
used as index terms.

If several works have addressed the problem of scaling-up classifiers,
they have mainly dealt with collections where either the number of
examples is large, or the dimension of the underlying vector space is
high, or both (this is typically the case of the recent PASCAL challenge
on large scale learning). Very few works have directly addressed the
problem of deploying/developing classifiers on a very large number of
categories (a situation which, in general, entails that the number of
examples is large, and the dimension of the underlying vector space is
high). In particular, no theoretical results have been established
regarding the best strategy to follow for deploying a given classifier
on large category systems.

The LASCAR (Large Scale CAtegoRization) project directly aims at
developing theoretical results and pratical alorithms for deploying
classifiers in large category systems, as well as for developing new
classification technologies that can be used on large category systems.
To do so, the project brings together researchers from combinatorial
optimization, machine learning, information retrieval, statistics and
distributed systems, and will make use of the Grid5000 architecture for
deployment and tests.

The successful candidate will participate to the theoretical
developments already initiated in the project, as well as to the design
of the algorithms and their deployment and test on the grid. The
candidate will benefit from the on-going work on a sub-part of DMOZ
(comprising 140,000 categories) with several classifiers (kNN, Naive
Bayes, SVMs, Random Forests).

For further information, please contact:
Eric Gaussier
Tel.: 33 4 76 51 45 15
Email: Eric.Gaussier@imag.fr

**************************************************
***************** French version *****************
**************************************************

Offre de PostDoc

Lieu : laboratoire LIG (http://www.liglab.fr), Grenoble
Date de démarrage : d'ici janvier 2009
Durée : 1 an
Membres du projet : A. Antoniadis, M. Burlet, Y. Denneulin, E. Gaussier,
S. Aseervatham
Site web : http://www-id.imag.fr/~denneuli/LASCAR/index.html

Description

plusieurs classifieurs (kNN, SVMs, Naive Bayes, Random Forests).

Pour tout renseignement, prière de contacter :
Eric Gaussier
Tel. : 33 4 76 51 45 15
Email : Eric.Gaussier@imag.fr

*************************************************

This SIGIR-IRList message and the SIG-IRList Digest (a moderated IR newsletter), are brought to you by SIGIR, distributed from the University of Sheffield and edited by Raman Chandrasekar (irlist-editor@acm.org).

* To submit an article, e-mail irlist-editor@acm.org with the subject heading SUBMIT
* To unsubscribe, e-mail listproc@sheffield.ac.uk with no subject and the following body text: unsubscribe irlist
* To subscribe, e-mail listproc@sheffield.ac.uk with no subject and the following body text: subscribe irlist <your name>
* For more info, visit: http://www.sigir.org/sigirlist/

These files are not to be sold or used for commercial purposes.

THE OPINIONS EXPRESSED WITHIN THIS DOCUMENT DO NOT REPRESENT THOSE OF THE EDITOR, MICROSOFT CORPORATION OR THE UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD. LA-Web 2008 will be held in Vila Velha, Espírito
Santo, Brazil.

LA-WEB 2008 is endorsed by the IW3C2 International World Wide Web
Conference Committee and its proceedings will be published by the IEEE
Computer Society Press. This year, LA-WEB will be co-located with
WEBMedia 2008.

We invite high quality papers describing original work in all areas
of Web research. Papers should properly place the work in the context
of the conference's theme, cite related work, and clearly indicate its
innovative aspects and contributions to the field. Papers must be
submitted electronically via the conference's website, and must be
formatted using the IEEE-CS guidelines (see below). We encourage
authors to submit papers of up to 10 pages long.

Location

Vila Velha is part of the metropolitan Vitória, which is one of
Brazil's oldest capitals. A city that has modernized itself without
losing sight of its historical background. It unites past and present
in the same beautiful scene, from the traditions of fishermen and clay
potmakers to the many buildings and monuments in the Historical Center
with its churches and secular convents.

The city has beautiful mangroves, parks, squares and gardens. It is
one of the most arboreous cities in Espírito Santo. There are 91
square meters of green area for each inhabitant that are distributed
between leisure retreats and environmental preservation areas.
Ecosystems that shelter hundreds of flora and fauna species, and
contribute to the quality of life of the residents as well as
enchanting visitors.

Fishes, shrimps and crabs, prepared in clay pots, are the basic
ingredients of the Capixaba fish stew and pie, which is the most
traditional plate. However the city also offers visitors a chance to
navigate through an enormous variety of seasonings and flavors. Dozens
of restaurants, which are guaranteed by the townhall's standard
Quality Seal, cultivate and reinvent Brazilian and international
dishes.

The sun illuminates Vitória and shines across its bay of clear waters,
unmasking the calm and cozy beaches that welcome residents and
visitors. And when night falls, the city joy is revealed in the
charming bars and night clubs where there is always a smile and
friendly word for new arrivals. Furthermore, Vitória offers a varied
and sophisticated commerce which can attend to the most demanding
customers.

Important Dates

Paper Submission: July 6, 2008
Notification of Acceptance: Aug 6, 2008
Camera-ready version: Aug 18, 2008

Topics

*       Browsers and user interfaces
*       E-commerce, E-Science, E-government and E-Learning
*       Digital libraries
*       Multimedia and hypermedia
* Mobility and ubiquitous web access
*       Performance, reliability and scalability
*       Search and data mining
*       Semantic web
*       Web engineering
*       Collaboration and web communities
* Security, privacy and copyright issues
*       XML and web services
*       Collaborative tagging
*       Blogging
*       Social Networks
* Web spam characterization, detection and filtering
*       Web visualization
*       Web usability and accessibility
* Web 2.0 approaches and applications

Conference Chair

Ricardo Baeza-Yates
Yahoo!
Recently I asked you all if marketing-ish messages should be
sent to the list. My thanks to all the people who responded. People seem to
welcome such messages in general, and some said this needs to be decided message
by message. I hear you, and will endeavor to filter appropriately.

One respondent also asked if he could send out his IR-related
blog address to the list. Maybe we can do better. If any of you have
suggestions for IR-related sites and blogs that are *not* marketing
sites, please send it to me, and I’ll send out a (filtered) compilation.

THE ELSEVIER GRAND
CHALLENGE

The
Elsevier Grand Challenge: Knowledge Enhancement in the Life Sciences is a
contest created to improve the way scientific information is communicated and
used. The contest invites members of the scientific community to describe
and prototype a tool to improve the interpretation and identification of
meaning in (online) journals and text databases relating to the life sciences.
Specifically we are looking for new ways to:

1)
improve the process/methods/results of creating, reviewing and editing
scientific content

2)
interpret, visualize or connect the knowledge more effectively, and/or

3)
provide tools/ideas for measuring the impact of these improvements.

While the traditional functions of
peer-review, quality control, dissemination and archiving remain at the heart
of scientific publishing, it is clear that new technologies are creating
opportunities to facilitate interpretation of data. In initiating the Elsevier
Grand Challenge, we hope to interact with the scientific community to discuss
changing modes of publishing and knowledge sharing with innovative groups who
are interested in changing the way science is published. The objective is to
generate useful new ideas that could have a widespread impact on scientific
publishing in general.

Abstracts
are now invited; see www.elseviergrandchallenge.com
for the timeline, format, evaluation criteria, details on the data set, and
intellectual property aspects and submission link. Submissions will close on July 15th, 2008.

From the submitted
abstracts, a number of semi-finalists will be selected by our multi-disciplinary
Panel of Judges. These semi-finalists will be given the opportunity to work
with a large collection of Elsevier life science content to develop and refine
their concept. The semi-finalists will present their work to the Panel of
Judges who will select a small group of finalists. Should they wish,
semi-finalists and finalists can potentially explore the commercial
development of their tool in collaboration with Elsevier.

Finalists
will be invited to present their vision papers in a public symposium at which
the Panel of Judges will announce the winners. The first place winner will be
awarded a cash prize of $35,000 and the second place winner a cash prize of
$15,000. All finalists will receive free access to ScienceDirect and Scopus
for a year.

The focus of the 2nd Symposium on Future
Directions in Information Access will be to continue this theme by dedicating
an entire day to the discussion and promotion of such research in a fun,
entertaining and exciting way.

Why future directions,, because we want to encourage submission that focus on
the early research such as pilot studies, presenting challenges and future
opportunities, conceptual and theoretical work, and the contributions from
doctoral work.

Why Information Access, because it captures the broader ideas of information
retrieval, storage and management to include interaction and usage.

SYMPOSIUM AIMS
The objectives of the IRSG FDIA Symposium are:
* To provide an accessible forum for new researchers to share and discuss
their research and projects:
particularly PhD students, researchers new to the field, and post doctoral
researchers
* To help foster formative and tentative research ideas.
* To encourage discussion and successful progression.
* To share outcomes of doctoral work.

CALL FOR PAPERS
This symposium calls for research papers to be submitted on topics about
Information Access. We especially encourage early research which presents
initial work that survey and present future challenges and opportunities,
present pilot studies, explore conceptual or theoretical models, etc.

Submission focusing on new directions and emerging work in Information
Access/Retrieval which create discussion and provoke reaction are strongly
encouraged. Submissions should provide the necessary background and motivation
of the topic, so as to maximize the benefit to the author and fellow
participants.

A paper should aim to include the following:
* Motivation for the research
* Background and related work (with key references)
* Particular issues highlighted for discussion and main research
questions/challenges

A paper may also wish to include:
* Description of proposed or performed research
* Outline of Conceptual/Theoretical Models
* Research methodology and experiments

Areas of research include, but are not limited to:
Databases
Information Retrieval
Human Computer Interaction
Multimedia and Multimodal
Knowledge Management
Bio, Chemo, Med, Eco, etc. Informatics

All papers will be peer reviewed by at least one senior researchers on the
Programme Committee. Papers should be around 4-8 pages in length in eWics
Format using the Word or Latex templates (submitted in PDF).

IMPORTANT DATES
Papers submission:              July 1st, 2008
Notification of acceptance: August 4th, 2008
Camera-ready papers:            August 25th, 2008
Symposium:                     September 22nd, 2008

ORGANIZATION
Leif Azzopardi, University of Glasgow
Ayse Goker, City University
Andy MacFarlane, City University
Murat Yakici, University of Glasgow

PROGRAMME COMMITTEE
Alex Bailey, Google
Nick Craswell, Microsoft Research
Juan Manuel Fernandez Universidad de Granada
Norbert Fuhr    Universitat Duisburg Essen
Gareth Jones    Dublin City University
Gabriella Kazai Microsoft Research
Udo Kruschwitz, Univesity of Essex
Monica Landoni, University of Strathclyde
David Losada Universidad de Santiago de Compostela
Andy MacFarlane City University
Massimo Melucci  University of Padua
Micheal Oakes   University of Sunderland
Steve Roberston Microsoft Research
Stefan Rueger   Open University
Ian Ruthven     University of Strathclyde
Mark Sanderson  University of Sheffield
Dawei Song      Open University
Jun Wang        University College London
Maarten de Rijke University of Amsterdam
