* AIM OF THE WORKSHOP *

The aim of this workshop is to provide a forum for discussion about issues
related to information credibility and its evaluation.

As computers and computer networks become more sophisticated, a huge
amount of information, such as that found in Web documents, has been
accumulated and circulated. Such information gives people a framework
for organizing their daily lives. A well-functioning society needs technology
that can be used to manage this wealth of information and, in particular,
investigate its credibility. This technology would be able to handle a wide
range of tasks: extracting credible information related to a given topic,
organizing this information, detecting its provenance, clarifying
background, facts, and various related opinions and the distribution of
them, and so on. Especially, as the Web is becoming a major source of
information nowadays, it is necessary to provide efficient and reliable
methods for evaluation of Web content's trustworthiness.

We invite submissions on any aspects of information credibility on the

* SUBMISSION *

Submissions should be sent in English in PDF format via the submission website. Papers should
adhere to ACM formatting guidelines and should not exceed 8 pages. They must be original and
have not been submitted for publication elsewhere. We encourage also position papers outlining
interesting research directions.

The accepted papers are going to appear in CIKM Workshops Proceedings published by ACM either
as full (up to 8 pages) or short papers (up to 4 pages) depending on the review results.
At least one author of each accepted submission should register by the end of the early
registration period in order for the paper to be included in the proceedings.

This is a second call for papers for a workshop on Geographic Information
Retrieval (GIR'08), to be held in conjunction with the 17th ACM Conference
on Information and Knowledge Management, Napa Valley, USA
(http://www.cikm2008.org/). The workshop is the fifth in a series of
successful workshops held previously in conjunction with SIGIR 2004, CIKM
2005, SIGIR 2006 and CIKM 2007. The workshop will take place immediately
following the conference on October the 29th and 30th 2008.

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together the growing community of
researchers and practitioners working in the field of geographic information
retrieval to discuss further progress within the field and potential future
research strands. Examples of topics that are particularly relevant include,
but are not confined to:

. user needs and studies for geographic search;
. architectures for geographic search engines;
. spatial indexing of documents and images;
. extraction of geographical context from documents and geo-datasets;
. geographical annotation techniques for geo-referenced documents and
images;
. design, construction, maintenance and access methods for
geographical ontologies, gazetteers and geographical thesauri;
. geographical query interfaces for the web and geo-spatial libraries;
. geographic information question/ answering services;
. dealing with natural language in geographic information retrieval;
. visualising of the results of geographic searches;
. relevance ranking for geographical search; and
. evaluation of the results of geographical search.

We invite the submission of papers of up to 8 pages for presentation as long
papers (30 minutes) and 2 page short abstracts reporting on work in progress
for short presentations (15 minutes). We particularly encourage PhD
candidates to submit short papers reporting on work in progress. All
submissions will be reviewed by three members of the program committee, and
all accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings.

AIMS & TOPICS OF INTEREST:

Due to the dramatically increasing amount of available data, effective and
scalable solutions for data organization and search are essential.
Distributed solutions naturally provide promising alternatives to standard
centralized approaches. With the computational power of thousands or
millions of computers in clusters or P2P systems, the challenges that arise
are manifold, ranging from efficient resource discovery to load balancing
issues and distributed ranking problems. This workshop will provide space
for researchers to discuss these problems and to define new directions for

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

Papers should not exceed 8 pages, double column, including figures, tables

Submitted papers will undergo a peer review process by at least three
members of the program committee. Notification and reviews will be
communicated via email.

All workshop proceedings will be printed along with the CIKM proceedings by

Workshop Objectives
===================

The Semantic Web is the vision of a Web of data usable for both humans
but also machines. This web, consists of inter-connected instance data
annotated with possibly expressive ontologies. Therefore a tremendous
amount of information becomes available that should be processed based
on formal semantics attached to it. The Semantic Web community has
developed a number of languages (such as RDF, RDF Schema, OWL) that
deploy logic for this purpose. Impressive progress has been made on
scalable storage, querying and inference for these languages, and they
are successfully being deployed on large intranets and medium-scale
web-applications.

However existing reasoning techniques often fail to live up to the
expectations put into them in this context. They can often neither
deal with high number of instances, the expressiveness of the
ontologies describing them or the inherent inconsistency and
incompleteness of data on the Web.

This workshop is intended to focus on these problems of scalability
and robustness of reasoning on the Web, and furthermore to investigate
alternative reasoning methods, which take incompleteness and
distribution of data and knowledge as inherent properties into
account.

NeForS08 is the follow-up of the first international workshop on
"New forms of reasoning for the Semantic Web: scalable, tolerant and
dynamic", which took place in Busan, Korea in November 2007 and was
co-located with the 6th International Semantic Web Conference
(ISWC 2007) and 2nd Asian Semantic Web Conference (ASWC 2007).

Topics of Interest
==================

We welcome all research contributions that address one or more of the
following topics:

* Reasoning for the Web
* Querying and searching
* Scalability to the Web level
* Efficient storage of structured data that scale to a very large size

We also aim to attract participants from scientific fields not
typically seen at Semantic Web events:

* Economics can tell us about cost-benefit trade-off models, sunk-cost
theory and the role of negotiation in obtaining near-optimal results
under bounded resources

* Cognitive Science can tell us about strategies of human memory and
human reasoning which is so succesful in reaching good enough
conclusion in limited time-spans, using methods such as priming,
attention scoping, recency-based self-optimising memory, etc.

* Computational Learning Theory has contributions to make with their
notions of Probably Approximately Correct (PAC) computing, and
strategies for abstraction and compression of information.

* Combinatorial Search has made recent breakthroughs in handling
massive search-spaces with heuristics based on Monte Carlo
simulations.

Event Information
=================

The workshop will take place during the 3rd Asian Semantic Web
Conference (ASWC2008) as a full-day event. It will be organized as a
full day event and include an invited talk by Kyung-il Tony Lee,
president and CEO of Saltlux Inc. on the industrial view on semantic
technologies and the need for large-scale reasoning.

Please note that for every accepted paper at least one of the authors
must attend the workshop and must register for the workshop and the
main conference. Submission of a paper is not required for attendance
at the workshop. However, in the event that the workshop cannot
accommodate all who would like to participate, those who have
submitted a paper will be given priority.

Submissions
===========

The workshop invites full papers (up to 15 pages) as well as short
papers (up to 5 pages). All contributions will be peer reviewed by the
program commitee (see http://nefors08.larkc.eu) and accepted
submissions will be published in a dedicated book. The number of
accepted papers will be kept deliberately low in order to leave
sufficient time for discussion after presentations. Additionally we
are considering a special issue in a journal on semantic computing for
extended versions of selected, high quality submissions.

Submitted papers must be written in English and one of the following
format must be used for the first submission: PDF, PS, DOC. For
submissions please follow LNCS formatting instructions (see
http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-2-72376-0 for
details) to prepare your paper and consider using the camera ready
format even for the first submission.

Position Overview

TextWise LLC is actively undertaking research, development, and
productization of semantic technologies. As part of this effort, we
have an immediate need for a research scientist to perform the following
duties:

* Investigate and elaborate techniques for representing the semantic content of natural language texts.
* Develop language-specific and language-independent algorithms and heuristics.
* Develop software prototypes in order to test these algorithms and heuristics using real world data.
* Corpus analysis for the discovery of linguistic patterns and features.
* Develop and maintain content databases for development and testing.
* Design and perform evaluations of algorithms and prototypes.

Required qualifications for this position are as follows:

* Masters or PhD in linguistics, computational linguistics, or closely related area.
* Competence in programming in one or more of the following: C/C++, Perl or Java.
* Experience in developing and applying corpus-based methods in text analysis.
* Fluency in English.
* Experience creating taxonomies and/or ontologies extremely desirable.
* Experience in machine learning techniques a plus.
* Fluency (speaking, reading, and language theory) of one foreign language preferred.

TextWise is a small company with a start-up atmosphere. The team style
is collaborative and high energy. You will work daily with a team of
scientists. In addition, you will also interact with the Software

Description

Several categorization problems involve category systems comprising a
very large number of categories. Patent offices, for example, are in
charge of assigning, to every patent request, a code from the IPC
(International Patent Classification), which contains roughly 70,000
sub-divisions. DMOZ, which is often deemed as the largest Web directory,
contains in the range of 600,000 categories, into which new pages are
categorized. A similar situation is encountered with the semantic
annotation of documents (e.g. journal abstracts) in the medical domain,
where concepts of MeSH (which contains more than 150,000 concepts) are
used as index terms.

If several works have addressed the problem of scaling-up classifiers,
they have mainly dealt with collections where either the number of
examples is large, or the dimension of the underlying vector space is
high, or both (this is typically the case of the recent PASCAL challenge
on large scale learning). Very few works have directly addressed the
problem of deploying/developing classifiers on a very large number of
categories (a situation which, in general, entails that the number of
examples is large, and the dimension of the underlying vector space is
high). In particular, no theoretical results have been established
regarding the best strategy to follow for deploying a given classifier
on large category systems.

The LASCAR (Large Scale CAtegoRization) project directly aims at
developing theoretical results and pratical alorithms for deploying
classifiers in large category systems, as well as for developing new
classification technologies that can be used on large category systems.
To do so, the project brings together researchers from combinatorial
optimization, machine learning, information retrieval, statistics and
distributed systems, and will make use of the Grid5000 architecture for
deployment and tests.

The successful candidate will participate to the theoretical
developments already initiated in the project, as well as to the design
of the algorithms and their deployment and test on the grid. The
candidate will benefit from the on-going work on a sub-part of DMOZ
(comprising 140,000 categories) with several classifiers (kNN, Naive
Bayes, SVMs, Random Forests).

Si plusieurs travaux se sont intéressés au problème du passage à
l'échelle de classifieurs, la majorité s'est concentrée sur des
collections pour lesquelles le nombre d'exemples ou le nombre
d'attributs est grand (le récent « challenge » PASCAL Large Scale
Learning est un bon exemple) et peu ont abordé le problème du
déploiement ou du développement de classifieurs sur des très grands
systèmes de catégories. En particulier, aucun résultat théorique n'a été
jusqu'ici proposé pour déployer un classifieur donné sur de très grands
systèmes de catégories.

Nous abordons directement, dans le projet LASCAR (LArge Scale
CAtegoRization), le problème de la catégorisation sur un grand nombre de
catégories, mettant en jeu un grand nombre d'exemples comportant un
grand nombre d'attributs. Pour cela, nous retenons deux axes de
recherche. Le premier, que nous qualifions de top-down, vise à déployer
n'importe quelle technologie de catégorisation sur des grands systèmes
de catégories en exploitant la structuration hiérarchique de ces
systèmes. Le deuxième, que nous qualifions de direct, vise à définir une
nouvelle technologie de catégorisation se concentrant directement sur
l'ensemble des catégories finales. Pour ces deux approches disposer de
grandes puissances de calcul est primordial, et le projet s'appuie sur
l'utilisation de la grille de calcul Grid5000. Il réunit de plus des
chercheurs de différentes communautés : optimisation combinatoire,
apprentissage artificiel, statistiques, systèmes distribués.

La personne recrutée en postdoc participera aux développements
théoriques déjà initiés dans le cadre du projet, ainsi qu'à
l'élaboration des algorithmes et à leur déploiement et test sur la
grille de calcul. La personne bénéficiera du travail déjà en cours sur

Introduction

LA-Web 2008 is the sixth of a series of refereed conferences aimed at
providing a venue in Latin America for researchers and technologists
from around the world to present, demonstrate and discuss the latest
Web developments. LA-Web 2008 will be held in Vila Velha, EspÃrito
Santo, Brazil.

LA-WEB 2008 is endorsed by the IW3C2 International World Wide Web
Conference Committee and its proceedings will be published by the IEEE
Computer Society Press. This year, LA-WEB will be co-located with
WEBMedia 2008.

We invite high quality papers describing original work in all areas
of Web research. Papers should properly place the work in the context
of the conference's theme, cite related work, and clearly indicate its
innovative aspects and contributions to the field. Papers must be
submitted electronically via the conference's website, and must be
formatted using the IEEE-CS guidelines (see below). We encourage
authors to submit papers of up to 10 pages long.

Location

Vila Velha is part of the metropolitan VitÃ³ria, which is one of
Brazil's oldest capitals. A city that has modernized itself without
losing sight of its historical background. It unites past and present

THE ELSEVIER GRAND CHALLENGE

The Elsevier Grand Challenge: Knowledge Enhancement in the Life Sciences is a contest created to improve the way scientific information is communicated and used. The contest invites members of the scientific community to describe and prototype a tool to improve the interpretation and identification of meaning in (online) journals and text databases relating to the life sciences. Specifically we are looking for new ways to:

1) improve the process/methods/results of creating, reviewing and editing scientific content

2) interpret, visualize or connect the knowledge more effectively, and/or

3) provide tools/ideas for measuring the impact of these improvements.

While the traditional functions of peer-review, quality control, dissemination and archiving remain at the heart of scientific publishing, it is clear that new technologies are creating opportunities to facilitate interpretation of data. In initiating the Elsevier Grand Challenge, we hope to interact with the scientific community to discuss changing modes of publishing and knowledge sharing with innovative groups who are interested in changing the way science is published. The objective is to generate useful new ideas that could have a widespread impact on scientific publishing in general.

Abstracts are now invited; see www.elseviergrandchallenge.com for the timeline, format, evaluation criteria, details on the data set, and intellectual property aspects and submission link. Submissions will close on July 15^th, 2008.

From the submitted abstracts, a number of semi-finalists will be selected by our multi-disciplinary Panel of Judges. These semi-finalists will be given the opportunity to work with a large collection of Elsevier life science content to develop and refine their concept. The semi-finalists will present their work to the Panel of Judges who will select a small group of finalists. Should they wish, semi-finalists and finalists can potentially explore the commercial development of their tool in collaboration with Elsevier.

Finalists will be invited to present their vision papers in a public symposium at which the Panel of Judges will announce the winners. The first place winner will be awarded a cash prize of $35,000 and the second place winner a cash prize of $15,000. All finalists will receive free access to ScienceDirect and Scopus for a year.

OVERVIEW
At the first symposium held last year, the aim was to provide a forum where
future directions of information access can be presented and discussed in an
open and friendly environment. The focus of the 2nd Symposium on Future
Directions in Information Access will be to continue this theme by dedicating
an entire day to the discussion and promotion of such research in a fun,
entertaining and exciting way.

Why future directions,, because we want to encourage submission that focus on
the early research such as pilot studies, presenting challenges and future
opportunities, conceptual and theoretical work, and the contributions from
doctoral work.

Why Information Access, because it captures the broader ideas of information
retrieval, storage and management to include interaction and usage.

SYMPOSIUM AIMS
The objectives of the IRSG FDIA Symposium are:
* To provide an accessible forum for new researchers to share and discuss
their research and projects:
particularly PhD students, researchers new to the field, and post doctoral
researchers
* To help foster formative and tentative research ideas.
* To encourage discussion and successful progression.
* To share outcomes of doctoral work.

CALL FOR PAPERS
This symposium calls for research papers to be submitted on topics about
Information Access. We especially encourage early research which presents
initial work that survey and present future challenges and opportunities,
present pilot studies, explore conceptual or theoretical models, etc.

Submission focusing on new directions and emerging work in Information
Access/Retrieval which create discussion and provoke reaction are strongly
encouraged. Submissions should provide the necessary background and motivation
of the topic, so as to maximize the benefit to the author and fellow
participants.

A paper should aim to include the following:
* Motivation for the research
* Background and related work (with key references)
* Particular issues highlighted for discussion and main research
questions/challenges

A paper may also wish to include:
* Description of proposed or performed research
* Outline of Conceptual/Theoretical Models
* Research methodology and experiments
